The NYC art scene seems to be evolving like a big amoeba as of late. I have recently visited art "hot pockets" in Bushwick, Williamsburg, and Long Island City in Queens.
Some thoughts RE: Long Island City
The Long Island City art scene looks like it has finally gained some momentum over the last year or so, probably as a result of mainstays Socrates Sculpture Park and P.S. 1 attracting art folks, coupled with affordable rents, and an overall sense that the neighborhoods in LIC may become the next Williamsburg/Greenpoint. There has also been alot of condominium development in LIC, so as the story goes: more upwardly mobile people living in expense condos = more cash in the hood for art. The satellite art communities appear much more dispersed in LIC than Bushwick or Williamsburg probably as a result of being new. Art spots like Texas Firehouse are located by the East River, whereas the galleries climate and Dutch Kills are located on 24th Street nearer to the Citi building. Look for alot of growth in the LIC art scene over the next year. oooh it's gettin hot in LIC!!! Let's not forget other noteworthy artorgz that are making waves in the LIC: Flux Factory, Fischer Landau Center for Art, and the Sculpture Center. I know there are more, I am just too tired to remember right now.
Stay tuned for more mindless meanderings regarding NYC art world localities, platonic shifts, uber trends, hey! is that a new term I just invented? Anyway, if you were expecting a real article, remember this is a blog. Goodnight y'all.
