Losing weight and keeping it off can seem like an unattainable goal. We start with all the enthusiasm and motivation in the world, and then get discouraged when we feel the soreness from our first workout. What is the recipe for weight loss success?


Do a bit of thinking about your goals first. Is there a particular occasion you are trying to lose weight for? Is there a specific weight loss goal you’d like to reach? Do you simply want to feel more energetic, or is there a medical reason behind the need to lose the pounds? These are the types of things that you need to really think about.


Keep a weight loss journal listing your progress. You should only weigh yourself once a week. Weighing yourself too often can cause you to get anxious. Also make a diary of all of the foods you eat daily and an estimate of the calories you take in. You should write down every single thing you consume, including snacks and drinks. Simply writing down what you eat and drink can prevent you from making poor choices.


When you are very hungry, you tend to make unhealthy food decisions. Make sure to have healthy foods available to you when you are away from home to avoid this type of problem. You can avoid eating out by packing your own lunch. Making your own lunch keeps you in charge of your caloric intake and will stop the temptation to eat out in its tracks. As it’s typically much less expensive to bring your own lunch than to dine out, you could end up saving money as well as your waistline!


A truly great weight loss plan will focus on both diet and exercise. You have to take the time for physical activities that you actually want to do. If you are having trouble including exercise in your normal schedule, try to focus on having fun, rather than doing a workout. Find an activity that you enjoy and make time to do that. Ban junk food from your house! Give it away. Throw it away! Just get rid of it! Eliminate the sources of your bad eating habits and increase the availability of fruits and veggies. If eating unhealthy foods requires the effort of leaving the house to buy them, you will choose the easier, more convenient option of eating the healthy foods already available.


Get a friend to workout with. We can often make excuses if we only answer to ourselves and ignore our responsibility to stay healthy. Working out with friends helps keep you motivated to keep going, especially when you start feeling fatigued or discouraged.
