Meeting your weight loss goal may seem like a distant dream. Motivation can slip away over time. How is it that some people don’t have this problem? Some people can lose weight and stay light for an extended period of time. Why is it that they are successful and how can you replicate their results?
Setting clearly defined goals is one of the most important steps in weight loss. Do you want to lose a lot of weight, or do you just want to be able to fit into some clothes that have been too tight for some time? Or would you like to improve your overall health and fitness levels? Goals provide focus and allow you to gauge your progress along the way.
Having to stare your progress (or lack thereof) in the face is one way to keep yourself on track. You should write down everything you consume in a food diary. At the end of the day, total up your calorie intake and see if you are within an acceptable range. Use your journal to keep track of your weekly weight losses or gains. Tracking your progress with charts gives you a very clear idea of how far you have come.
Always make your food choices before hunger strikes. Being hungry while making food choices can be counterproductive. However, if you are in a situation where you have to make food choices while you are hungry, try to make good choices. Try preparing your meals prior to being hungry and keeping healthy snacks around to avoid temptations. Rather than choosing restaurants, make the effort to pack your own lunch. This not only helps you lose weight, but also helps you reduce food expenses.
Successful weight loss programs need to include both dieting and exercise. Find an enjoyable workout, and be sure to participate in it several times each week. If it is difficult for you to get regular exercise, try incorporating exercise into things you normally enjoy doing. Go for a walk with your friends when you hang out. If you love to dance, think about taking a class – the options out there are endless. If you like hiking, you can go explore several trails near you.
Do not let other members of your household fill your fridge with bad food choices. At first your family may find it a bit difficult to adjust, but they will come to realize that it is important for all of you to be healthy. You should reserve your kitchen shelves and your fridge for healthy foods only. Nobody will have to live without a variety of snacking options. Both adults and kids will benefit from eating fruit. There are many other healthy snacks, as well, including granola.
Do you have a friend that wants to lose weight too? If so, set up goals together and be there to encourage each other when the other is lacking in motivation. Even when you are at the end of your rope, your friends can cheer you on and help you stay on track. Look to others when you need some help.
